Mission Statement: (See Web Site For Updated Information)
OUR GOAL AT VISTACARE HOSPICE is to provide comfort (physical, emotional, spiritual) care for patients who have a life limiting illness and support their families at the same time.
WHAT VOLUNTEERING AT VISTACARE HOSPICE PROVIDES MEDICAL ORIENTED VOLUNTEERS is a chance to see and, to some degree experience the ?other end? of the spectrum of our medical care system, which is not normally taught in the classroom. The kind of medical care that Hospice provides is comfort oriented (or palliative) care instead of life prolonging care. It is when it has been determined that an individual has 6 months or less to live; given that their illness takes it?s natural progression that Hospice care occurs. As a Volunteer you get to observe, sit with, talk with, be around both the patient and family and the professionals on the Hospice Team to see how this ?comfort care? called Hospice works, affects all sorts of people and even how it affects you.
PATIENT CARE VOLUNTEERS are needed in Austin and all surrounding areas (i.e.: Bastrop, Smithville, Round Rock, Taylor, Kingsland areas) who are compassionate and reliable. As a Volunteer you will become a friendly face while providing visits with our hospice patients and/or families at a very unique time in their life.
The activities during your visits will vary depending on the day and what you and your patient/family want to do. This can mean doing anything from (but not limited to) sitting and looking through scrap books, sharing a cup of coffee, sitting outside and chatting while enjoying the weather, watching a TV show to enjoying a nice meal together You may even provide a break for the caregiver so they can ?get away? for a while.
OTHER VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: HANDYMAN, MASSAGE THERAPISTS, BEAUTICIANS, KNITTERS, SINGERS, MUSICIANS, OR ANY OTHER ?SPECIAL PROJECTS? YOU CAN THINK OF are needed as well
As a Volunteer you choose when, where and how often you volunteer. If you have two hours on weekends ? then you visit your patient for two hours on weekends. If you have Tuesday evenings open and you would like to volunteer ? then that is when you volunteer If you have one Saturday a month where you can volunteer . . well, you get the idea.
ORIENTATION is required and is provided on a one-to-one basis or in a small group. Orientations are scheduled around the Volunteer?s schedule and mine.
